: when we say the blackhole explosion occurs some 40,000 light years away, does it mean that the explosion we are seeing now actually happened 40,000 years ago ??? : To me, i understand that whatever our telescopes receive is the light which arrives into our telescopes at that point of time. : Am i wrong ?? : I will really appreciate if somebody could just tell me more about astronomy. : Write to me at " etsline@cyberway.com.sg " : Thanks a lot ! Yes it does. It just means if you could transport yourself there instantly, the event that you obsevered would 40000 years in the past for that object. Now 40000 years is peanuts in astronomic terms. The Hubble Space Telescope can see light billions of years in the past - to a time when galaxies were in the early stages of formation. |
