at the center of the black hole, according to string theory as postulated by Smolin and discussed in Greene's book- the elegant universe.

General Relativity GR is accurate outside of the singularity. GR does not have any fields, only mass and space curvature which acts as a lens.

You know that light which propagates along the normal of a lens does not curve. So the light propagating directly outward from the center of the black hole should not curve- and it should escape unless there is another mechanism for preventing escape other than curvature.

I always thought that space was falling into the black hole as well, and that the event horizon is where space is moving into the black hole at the speed of light. The coordinate system seems to do this.

But Bruce who is expert on GR disputes this. And so I do not understand what can be preventing the escape of light.

Light incident on the black hole from the outside is absorbed no matter what the angle of incidence is.
