Taking AP classes related to the subject helps.

SAT/ACT requirements (and many other useful info)are usually posted on the university's web page, so go there and take a look.

Recommendations from HS teachers may help. Extra-curricular activities (olympiads, science fairs, interesting projects under HS teacher supervision).

Summer job as a some kind of technician or something computer-related one is also useful.
