The actual question posed by Dawn was can someone explain the specifics of what causes the
star to compress and reverse its gravity to begin a black hole.

GRAVITY DOES NOT REVERSE !!!
it's more like the big fat slob ate so much, and finally got so gol'danged fat that, he/she/it can't even get up to go to the bathroom any more.
