Einstein showed that gravity is the same thing as curved space. Light is affected by gravity simply because it is moving in a straight line through curved space. Space is so severely curved within the event horizon of a black hole, that there are no out-going pathways for light to take.

Overall, light is energy. But it has properties of both an energy wave and a particle (matter), depending on how you measure it. But a photon has zero rest mass.
