I`ve heard the term critical mass used in black hole speak It does not mean the same as what it means withe nuclear reactions.

From what I hear John Archibald Wheeler used the term regarding energy extraction from a black hole. He liked the idea of using tbe term to mean something non-destructive. He may not have coined it`s use but I know that is how it`s used in his and Taylor`s new text.
