Ok, Fred, I have read all the other replies and have come to the conclusion you don't understand what is going on here, they are right and you are wrong. Do you know what an escape velocity is? You HAVE to reach that to leave the place....otherwise, you start to arc back downward, if you correct for that arcing, you'll just go strait down. You HAVE to go faster than the speed of light to be "gaining ground" in the first place, ok? Anti-matter WILL NOT get you near the speed of light either, and don't reply back to say, "but I am accelerating" because it won't matter if you accelerate or not, you just can't do it without going faster than the speed of light.

One large enough so that my space ship won't be torn apart by the gravitational gradient. : :Suppose my spaceship has an engine powerfull enough to provide some velocity away from the object in the centre of the black hole. Not very difficult, as long as the black hole is a big one. : :Then as long as my engine is stocked with fuel, I can escape the black hole. Can't I. : :My question is, using a fusion engine, whats the smallest black hole I could cross the event horizon and survive to tell the tale??
