: Since black holes don't give off any light, they are virtually invisible. Scientists look for matter being drawn toward an invisible source of gravity (i.e. - asteroids, gases, dust). By charting the trajectory of matter moving from different directoins toward a common center, the origin of the black hole can be determined.
