: what is a black hole?

In very elementary terms, a black hole is a (large) mass of such small volume that gravity is so intense that the escape velocity is greater than the speed of light. To get more details, look up "black holes" with your browser. There is an excellent book "Black Holes and Time Warps" by Kip Thorne, which describes them much better than I can.
