Detection is by a combination of two things. (1) No radiation directly. (2) Gravitational evidence of a very heavy object. This may be an oversimplification, but general relativity combined with known physical properites of matter admit no other possibility. I suggest you read "Black Holes and Time Warps" by Kip Thorne, et al.
