It is possible to indirectly moniter the progress of a star being drawn into a black hole. It can be done by monitering stars' behavior. For exemple, if a star orbits an invisible object and/or spews gas into an invisible object that is reason to believe that a blck hole is present. Any type of telescope can be used to moniter the event.
