: What happens when you break the sound barrier? what causes the boom? Its the result of a pressure wave that builds on the leading edge of the craft. Sound travels through air, the planes engine is going through the air faster than the sound it makes and it wants to catch up. Sort of like lightning. It knocks a hole in the air which has to be refilled with fresh air. Fill the hole suddenly and BOOM. |
