Dear quasar seeker; Perhaps I can be of assistance in visualizing the concept. The main thing is to realize that the vertical scale is exagerated millions of times. Some quasars are billions of light years away while much of the lensing probably takes place within 10 light years of the center. But at least be relieved that it is not essential to your blood glucose level that you understand any of it perfectly (or even imperfectly). And they will be just as beautiful. I am not an astrophysicist, but lets face it, theories like lightening strike in some unlikely spots.
