One Gigantic Wave Function....

If observing a partical causes a collapse of its wave function and instantaneously brings it into a state of being, then before you observed was merely a wave that described the "partical" as having a probability of being somewhere. My question is that if we were never to observe anything, wouldn't everything still be in that "wave" state. I heard that light travels in waves and interracts with matter as a particle. Doesn't this mean that before life was here, say at the first few billion years of the universe, all matter was not observed and therefore still a wave. It's like the universe was one giant wave function until an observer was created. So nothing really existed until we/anybody got here. Does this make since?
