Jimmy: I was just thinking, if we had more atmosphere, would we weigh less (because of the atmospheres gravity pulling us away from earth), or more (because of the weight of the atmosphere pushing down on us? Wayne: I can already hear the ridicule guns cocking, but here goes. Gravitational force "originating" at the earth's center has been cancelled out by the force of gravity in the hemisphere opposite the one you stand on. (Each hemisphere has its own center of gravity) So the only one acting on you is the one you stand on. Assuming the atmosphere has increased in density above your head the result would be more upward attraction, and you would feel lighter. A theory of quantum gravity will eventually demonstrate this to hold true. Just my opinion. (Let the laughter begin. I care not.) |
