: If the moon did not rotate on its own axis as it orbits the earth, we would see the back side of the moon on one side of the earth, and the front side on the other.

moon rotation and revolution are in lockstep, due to long term effect of earth's gravity. Mercury has almost reached that point in relation to the sun, its day is equal to 2 of its years.
