: Tidal gradients can't be transformed away. The curvature tensor cannot be made to vanish by a change of coordinates. That the Reimann tensor (not curvature tensor) does not vanish is irrelevant. All a nonzero Reimann tensor implies about tidal force is that the exist globally in every frame. Not locally. They vanish locally in every local inertial frame.
