Gravitational Field Potential As Opposed To Gravitational Force

Hello!

In my readings years ago, I ran across the concept of (if I remember it correctly) "gravitational field potential" or GFP.

GFP was supposed to be a quality separate from regular gravitational force. GFP has been invoked to explain how certain heavenly bodies can exert a "pull" or effect stronger than that which would be expected from gravitational force alone.

This is an intriguing concept, but I haven't heard about since my one brush with it years ago. Anyone know anything more about it?
