Are there gravitons being exchanged between masses or is spacetime curved by mass? - I don't believe that these are incompatible. What is meant by "spacetime is curved by mass" is that matter makes all bodies move on geodesics which may or may not deviate. What is meant by geodesic deviation is that the worldlines of particles which statt out parallel will either get closer together or father apart. They can do this by the fact that at different distances the force of gravity is different. This makes particles at one position accelerate at a different rate than those at other distances. The acceleration is independant of the body. ?What is space? It is defined by the mass in it. If the masses move apart we say that the sapce itself is curved. but it is the masses interacting with each other which does this. At least this is what Einstein thought. In quatnum gravity, as I understand it, the interatcion is mediated by particles which are given the name "gravitatons |
