Thermonuclear weapons, as horrific as they are, could not put a down payment on the end of the Earth. The end of the human race? That is more like what you are really talking about. In an all out worst case nuclear war, millions if not billions, would survive. The only thing that would really die, is civilization. For the human race, a catastrophe of unheralded proportions. For the Earth, not a big deal.
