Stars can also go the other way and become pulsars, they dont have to become black holes. : Ashley, : I'll try to make this quick. Usually a black hole forms when a large star runs out of fuel. When this happens there is no longer enough energy being produced at the core to counter-act the inward pull of gravity (the energy produced at the core pushes out, while gravity pulls in). The strength of gravity is so strong that the individual atoms making up the star can't even support threir own wieght on eachother, and they just collapse into the core of the star into a point of nearly infinite density which is called a singularity. The gravity is so strong aroung this singularity that not even light can escape.
