But how do you go about seeing an atom? To make a microscope big enough to see an atom you need a huge lens kilometers in diameter. Plus, to 'see' the atom you need to bounce light off it. I put it to you that to see an atom it is better to bounce smaller things like electrons, other atoms or high energy light of it and measure the effects on the electrons/light/smaller atoms. Electrons/light and so one are smaller than the atoms you are 'seeing'. So you do need tools smaller than the thing you are watching, the tools are just sub-atomic particles. The machines you need to generate the tools are huge particle accelerators many kilometers in diameter though.

This is an old Greek philosophy, about 2,500 years old. Unfortunately it has been supplanted by Quantum Mechanics which says that the smallest particles can only occur in integer parts. There is no such thing as half an electron.

Granted people once believed atoms to be indivisible but they where then found to be made of neutrons and protons. Neutrons and Protons where then thought to be indivisible and they where found to be made of Quarks and Gluons but there is currently no evidence that Quarks and Gluons are indivisble.
