: : ever hear about the constant of lightspeed to be : related directly to the permitivity/permeability of : space? Yup. It comes from Maxwells equations for Electromagnetism. The speed of light is the reciprocal of the product of the permittivity and permeability of free space. : As space expands or contracts, the permeability and permitivity : of space changes with it directly; which in turn directly : affects the consistancy of light. And the evidence that permittivity and permeability are variable is? If this where true then the extreme gravity near blackholes would effect these constants which in turn would effect lightspeed. This would produce some pretty wierd results which should be noticeable or measurable. : This argument comes from the discussion of the gravity : constant; or the speed thereof. As far as is known Gravity "travels" at light speed. Nothing in the Universe is thought to move with infinite velocity. Gravity is the effect of a mass "bending" spacetime in its the masses vicinity. As the mass moves through space the effects of the moving gravitational field propagate at lightspeed. This argument comes from the application of common sense. : Originally the argument stems from the origin that the : velocity of light was at once the same of gravity. And : that gravity is truely what is the constant... : comments... Gravity is Gravity, lightspeed is a constant. The two are some what different and apparently obey diferent laws with different causes. There is thought to be some underlying law in the universe that makes the value of the Gravitational constant G, the permittivity and permeability of free space, lightspeed c and other constants the values they are. These are called Grand Unified Field theories and at the moment do not explain WHY the Universe is the way it is. |
