Rest mass is an invariant property of matter. Relativistic mass would have one value in the longitudinal direction and another in the transverse direction, and it is not invariant in differing frame of reference. Relativistic energy does not increase due to the Lorentz contraction even thought they both transform the same way. Of course it is possible for an object to attain a kinetic energy greater than it's rest mass - this happens all the time in particle accelerators, however it would only have infinite energy at c, which is impossible.
