Consider a similar example involving two trains traveling in opposite directions toward each othrer,, but at half the speed of light. Relative to each other, they are @ the speed of light, and if either or both take that step forward, they have exceeded light speed withe respect to each other. Another question in tnis example is "when woud the two riders realize they were in serious trouble (i.e. see each other) ? : : : : Wouldn't it make sense that we could go beyond the speed of : : : : light??? The classic example: Theoretically-- If you were : : : : on a train going the speed of light, if a train could go the : : : : speed of light, and you took a step forward, you would be : : : : traveling faster than the speed of light... Wouldn't that make sense?

: : : Roger, you can't think of the question in those terms, because (1) The train could never go at the speed of light, and (2) As you approach the speed of light, your inertia approaches infinity, so it would take an infinite amount of energy to take that incremental step forward.

: : Look at it this way. If you were going just under the speed of light. So close that if you took one jump forward you would surpass it. As you took that jump your width would get shorter so that it will now take you longer to travel the same distance. This usually denotes your going slower. As well as that you would actually be going slower. Time in your inertial frame of reference would be slower than the time around you so you would never actually surpass the speed of light. Basically if you try to go faster you end up going slower than before you accelerated.

: i doon't understand were your coming form but i do understand that if you jump up strate on a train that is traveling at the nere speed of light then you would inded jump backwords, insted of in the same place that you jumped form in the frist time.
