The problem with thought experiments is you can't check them. If we could find a place without gravity, and a constantly accelerating elevator, and if we had an instrument that could accurately check the direction of force vectors, we would soon have an answer to your question. Until then we will have to rely on reason. Reason tells me he's wrong but then I'm not Einstein.
