Bruce,

I'm not minimizing this enormous feat. Whenever one compares great minds, however, it is necessary to value the 'greatness' of discoveries when compared to someone from a different time and place. My point is that Einstein had the Lorentz equations which are critical to formulate SR, whereas Newton didn't have any comparable equations (that I know of) in order to formulate classical mechanics. I don't think such considerations puts one in the field of a crackpot. Even Murray Gell-Mann has discussed Einstein's achievements and failures very openly. Einstein was a great man, but he wasn't a god.
