Aether, as I understand it, refers to the theory that that light is waving in a medium of some kind, just like sound moves through the air. The theory was dumped when it failed to explain the invariant speed of light. Technically, we are constantly moving through a soup of various particles, like neutrinos and such, but I don't think they fit the original definition of an aether.

Nobody knows what dark matter is right now. Until we find a particle or object with a large enough mass and abundance to account for observed dark matter, anything is possible.
