cosmologists are considering something like that, seeing as they may have to ressurect einstein's 'cosmic constant' [which is the virtual equivalent] to make their 'big bang' work [although now (i think to 'save face') they are dreaming up 'dark matter' and and 'dark energy' and giving anti-gravity properties to space and such?] as more plausible ideas.
