I have read that there are 11 dimensions, not 4. Gravitons travel through these extra dimensions and use them as short-cuts.

Imagine RUNNING around a track while your buddy WALKS across the field in between. It is true that you were moving faster, but he still beat you to the finish.

I hope this analogy helps clear things up.
