They are mathematically less stable than ordered orbits.

Say, a third planet randomly placed orbiting a star between orbits of two existing planet would have extremely unstable orbit if the orbit was close to one or the other existing orbits: the planet would be simply trown out (or in) when passing by another planet too close. More stable (less disturbed) is the orbit far from existing orbits (in between them or so).
