As a former mechanical engineer let me assure you that the speed of sound in water has not been seen, but it has been heard using audio transmission and detection, otherwise known as sonar, and with the appropriate time delay for transmission. The experiment has been performed several times and furthermore refined to become the submarines method of locating other objects, like enemy sugmarines.
