there is always alot of confusion about proper time and proper distance. Both are invariants (with respect to coordiante transformations). All observers agree on the wristwatch time between events in spacetime. Such as the wristwatch time of a stone in radial freefall as it falls between r=3M (event #1) and r=2M (event #2). Here are 2 pretty good references for SR. My favorite being the first chapter (Speeding) from Taylor and Wheeler's 'Exploring Black Holes' (intro to GR).
