I'm going to have to put that in my rolodex.

I think that Alex means that while the specific events and patterns of the universe may recede backwards into infinity, nothing can exist unless it follows logical laws. There does seem to be a bit of a contradiction there, and I can only suggest that logic is independent of these describing increasingly rudimentary systems. That is, logic does not exist as a system, but it contained within all systems.
