Nobody knows exactly what happens to anything as it comes into the vicinity of the singularity......except that matter is oblitterated due to "spaghetification" tidal forces.

I once read an interesting possibility based upon string theory that stated that physical processes may behave symetricly within dimesions that are of reciprocal size about the planck scale....10^-33 cm. In other words......if you reduced the size of some curled up dimensions to say half of the planck scale, that was equivilant to a ~~~twice the size of the planck scale universe~~~......you wouldn't be able to distinguish between the two based on the applicable laws of physics.

This has interesting consequences......because if a star where to collapse in OUR universe and squeeze itself into planck scale dimensions......then any further collapse at this point could just as well be looked upon as an expansion in that NEW universe. So while we see a singularity that COLLAPSES to infinite density, it is symetricaly equivilant to a singularity that EXPANDS to infinite size. Along this line of reasoning....it could very well mean that our expanding universe may be a collapsing singularity in a blackhole of another universe. There are many more SPECTACULAR consequences of this theory in string theory.......if you'd like to know.....just ask.
