As a bit of a newbie with regards to this stuff please excuse my lack of knowledge.

Assuming that the best way to communicate through space is using some form of light, is there not a way we can use our Sun to transmit a message ? If not that, what is likely the brighest thing we could create in our solar system that would not be damaging ?

As a side note, is there any way we know for certain whether there are planets in the Alpha Centuri system ?
