Ballet is a blend of beauty and the physics of motion. A large part of Ballet or Martial Arts training is aimed at teaching the student to maintain there balance as they go through there different forms of movement. Balance is achieved when an area of support lies in an appropiate place below the dancers body. If the support area is off to one side, gravity pulls or turns the dancer towards the floor.(the earth slams into the person). Gravity of course, pulls constantly on every part of the body, but the concept of a 'center of mass' of the body helps to simplify the picture. The center of mass is a mathematical point[zpe] whose position is determined by the distribution of mass within the body. The combined (pull or push) of gravity on all the parts of the body is said to operate through the center of mass.
