ok the laws of motion say that an object sustains velocity until acted on by an outside force. so lets pick the force of gravity in this case. what it seems like to me is that an equilibrium should be reached between the velocity of the moon and earths gravitational pull, therefore keeping the moon in a constant orbit.
does the earth do the same thing relative to the sun that you described happens to the moon?is this where the theory of relativity comes in?
