It seems to me that each country's leaders possess a range of beliefs, from individual to individual, and that there is considerable overlap in the spectrum of belief. Unfortunately the overlap includes individual beliefs that war is inevitable and maybe 'not so bad' afterall.

As scientists or former scientists who have some concept of the magnitude of destruction and radioactive aftermath, our obligation is continually reinforce the belief that it really is that bad.

Somehow it reminds me of the arguments over evolution on this forum. One argument is that evolution is only a theory and needn't be believed in spite of all the scientific evidence to the contrary.

The destruction and radioactivity are just theoretical extrapolations from isolated experiments. It's just theory they say. So we have to remind them that Hiroshima and Chernobyl were not experiments, they are real.
