Common prefixes (in descending order):

Of negative powers of 10:

deci (deciliter, decimeter)=10^-1=10-1
centi(centimeter, centimile)=10^-2=10-2
milli (millivolt, millisecond)= 10-3
micro (microgram, micronewton)=10-6
nano (nanokelvin, nanometer)=10-9
pico (picogram, picosecond) =10-12
femto (femtosecond, femtojoule)=10-15
atto (attogram, attopascale) =10-18

Of positive powers of 10:

Exa (exabyte, exagram) =1018
Peta (petawatt, petabit) =1015
Tera (terawatt, terasecond) =1012
Giga (gigaohm, gigajoule) =109
Mega (megabuck, megaparsec) =106
Kilo (kilogram, kiloton) =103
Deca (decaliter, decaton) =101

Prefixes usually abbreviate by their first letter (capital for positive, but small for negative powers of 10):

5 Gbuck =5x109 bucks
450 nm =450x10-9 meters = 4.5x10-7 meters.
