Well, the dark matter astronomers are talking about is the following. Sun is moving around Milky way with the velocity almost twice the orbital - like if the Milky way is actually few times heavier than all VISIBLE stars in it. So, there may be plenty of old INVISIBLE stars in it (brown dwarfs, newtron stars, black holes, etc.), or more exotic stuff like massive neutrinoes, or other weakly interactive with known matter particles/fields/energy form, waiting to be discovered. The only "signature" of dark matter is a gravitation.
