Well, It will be hard to win asymmetric war of attrition over a country which got used to live without much of nesessities but with variety of hydrogen bombs, missiles, lasers, satellites and submarines being produced in huge volumes on a regular basis. Also, remember a war of attrition between small Vietnam and mighty US with its all technological advances.

Also, I remember that in 80-s we argued in kitchens till late night - who will feel better after nuclear war? Usually most agreed that for average american it would be harder transition - to move from nice but burnt house and from life with all conveniences into a tight underground bunker, than such transition for an average russian (from life with very little conveniences anyway - to life with less of them). Wearing gas masks and working in elevated radiation or other challenging environment is not even considered inconvenience in Russia, especially in case of emergency. Use of masks/radiation suits and knowledge of nuclear survival tricks it taught as obligatory civil defense subject in all schools and colleges. Patience and coherence in obeying commands also makes them to cope with harsh conditions better.
