A system is stable only if it satisfies certain conditions. An amplifier can experience run-away feedback if its input is not regulated properly. In chaos theory, the small changes in the state of a system, such as those produced by the limit with which we can store data, can end up dominating the results of a calculation. Small physical changes, such as noise can lead to long term changes in a system. This is referred to as the butterfly effect.
