Its not really related to supersymmetry. Its a different concept called taget space duality (T-duality). Its a symmetry between winding and vibrational energies for strings. It leads to the explanation why GR and strings are compatible. Specifically the minimum string length is greater than the Planck length by several magnitudes. In essence it says that spaces smaller than this minimum string length don't exist. Subsequently spacetimes where GR metrics blow up (spacetimes whose scale is less than the Planck length), due to quantum fluctuations of the gravitational potential, don't exist. Phobos, at superstring forum, says there is still some question as to whether this holds for all possible string spacetimes. This and the graviton being a natural consequence of strings are 'biggies' for string theory. |
