They are cesium clocks. I did a project which derived the forumula used for the GPS from the Schwarzchild metric.
Btw-A black hole is one of two remnant possibilities for what lefts over after a catastrophic fusion event that we call a supernova. After you fuse to iron the chain is broken. I saw this show about neutron stars where they modeled matter directed to the surface of neutron stars, along magnetic flux lines, building up and fusing causing star quakes.
