But the event horizon isn't special at all -- it's just the point where the escape velocity (the speed you need to be travelling in order to never return to a body) exceeds the speed of light. In the case of a very large black hole (such as the billion solar mass monsters we think reside in the centers of most galaxies) you could pass right through the event horizon and not know it. You would continue to recieve transmissions from your friends outside--however the photons your own communications device would be sending out wouldn't be able to escape. You might not notice anything until you run into the TIDAL EFFECTS.

That's where the pull of the singularity (the actual collapsed object that _is_ the black hole) on the bottom of your feet is a bit stronger than the pull on the top of your head. The difference gets stronger and stronger as you fall toward the singularity until you're stretched out like a piece of spaghetti.

that's the ouch. the event horizon just means your friends don't get to see this happen to you.

: Did you know that a black hole and a white hole mixte together, there form an extremely unstable wormehole which is a shortcut betwin a bent part of space. Even if it was stable, you could'nt survive the radiation though...

But wasn't there a paper published that basically showed white holes change into black holes in fairly short order? Also you can build a stable, 'human friendly' wormhole! the trick is you need Negative matter (not Anti-Matter!) -- matter with a _negative_ energy density. A pair of these negative matter 'gates' would transport you instatanously to another location (very Sci-Fi, ne?)
