Colorful Star?

On Friday evening, around 9 pm, I was looking to the west and just above the mountain line was a beautiful sight. This star was showing every color of the rainbow. This was easily seen without the use of any optical device. Using a weak telescope, it looked like a crystal caught in the sun. I have seen this in the past, but not as close as Friday evening. Can anyone tell me what I saw. I live in the western edge of Riverside County in Southern Ca. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
