: : : It is not possible to travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. However, if a particle (with mass) is traveling at nearly the speed of light in a vacuum, then enters a material such a water where light slows down so that it now travels faster than light in that medium, it creates a shock wave analogous to a sonic boom. This shock wave is, of course, light. That photon carries away some of the kinetic energy of the particle thus slowing it to below the local speed of light. I once read that this effect has been used to detect cosmic radiation.
