I noticed where Richard put cosmology in the metaphysics bag. The reason I mention this is for two reasons:
1) Cosmology is now a verifiable predictive science with the advent of the WMAP experiment.
2) String theory hasn't attained the status of a verifiable predictive science. More the fault of technological limits for testing any predictions derived from the theory itself.

The interesting thing is the predicted differences in gravitational wave signatures from the beginning of the universe by the Ekpyrotic [string] models and the standard Guth model. Maybe this will be a possible test for the 'space gravitational wave' detector [forget the name of the experiment].
