yes, the infinite remainders that result from having infinite degrees of freedom in field theory are disturbing. renormalization can give results that fit observation, but, those really smell like force-fit solutions. they do not appear to have meaningful predictive value and imply the existence of realms that are beyond human perception [such as imaginary time and extra dimensions]. i object to that on the grounds it assumes facts not in evidence, nor provable by the scientific method.
